H&P Lifebelts: Our Rules to Live By

In 2015, H&P standardized a strategy to reduce the most common Serious Injury or Fatality (SIF) potential events across the company. Using a Team of Teams approach, 10 LifeBelts were established. Each H&P LifeBelt highlights actions individuals must take to protect themselves and others from SIF potentials. All our employees learn them, know them and live by them.

Anyone on H&P worksites has the authority and obligation to stop unsafe work practices resulting from failure to follow LifeBelts

Use electronic devices, including cell phones, only as approved

Lock out/tag out/try out to isolate energy sources

Establish and honor buffer zones and barricades

Use safe work practices when handling tubulars

Secure and inspect equipment to prevent dropped objects

Safely operate all vehicles

Perform pre-job planning to control and remove sif exposures

Maintain 100% tie off when working at heights

Keep out of the path of moving equipment

Use a permit to work when required

Our Safety Approach

Beyond OSHA

Safety performance in the drilling industry is typically measured based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injuries and the active rig years worked without an OSHA recordable injury, lost-time, or disabling injury.

We view these metrics as lagging indicators to safety concerns, which can encourage the wrong behavior such as under reporting incidents. While we still track these metrics for regulatory purposes, we have enhanced our safety efforts using a prevention-based methodology called Actively C.A.R.E. (Control And Remove Exposures).

Employee Safety Program

Our employee safety program now focuses on SIFs, which places more emphasis on near misses and injury exposures, especially those with SIF potential.

We believe it is important to take a more holistic and proactive approach to identify safety issues. By focusing on both actual and potential safety events, we use our SIF system to prevent serious injuries and fatalities as opposed to relying purely on incidents reported after they happen.

What is SIF?

While we do track TRIR, our focus is on Serious Injury or Fatality (SIF) potential events. This approach emphasizes near misses and high-risk exposures, helping prevent serious incidents before they happen rather than relying solely on reported injuries.

SIF stands for Serious Injury or Fatality. TRIR Stands for Total Recordable Incident Rate.

Human and Organization Performance

Human and Organizational Performance is a science-based approach to viewing mistakes so we can address them more effectively.

It recognizes that error is part of the human condition, and an organization’s process and systems greatly influence employee actions and choices and their likelihood of success.

H&P uses a Team of Teams approach to safety

It is made up of multiple departments and subject matter experts who monitor data weekly and listen to employee feedback to refine our safety strategy and objectives.

The HSE Team of Teams collaborates with three main groups that form our safety pillars: those with boots on the ground who ensure the right strategy is in place, evaluating tactics and providing face-to-face education to employees.

Safety Leadership Team

This team sets the strategic direction for the planning and implementation of the core HSE processes across the organization. They oversee the suitability and effectiveness of the HSE processes to control exposure for all H&P employees at the rigs and related worksites.

Dediated HSE Staff

This group assists operations in the day-to-day execution of the core HSE processes in the business units, regions and rigs. It includes regional safety directors, HSE specialists, HSE representatives and HSE lead investigators.

Training & Development Team

This team includes members from human relations, organizational development and H&P’s safety leadership coaches. They provide education and training for employees aimed to reduce exposures and improve safety performance.
