Detect, Mitigate & Recover From Downhole Stalls
H&P’s StallAssist® software was designed to predict, detect, mitigate, prevent and recover from downhole stalls. By improving bit and BHA reliability, it helps reduce sidetracks and lost-in-hole incidents, while extending motor and bit life. This translates to more footage drilled per BHA and reduced time to target.
Features & Benefits
As pressure is reaching the stall rating, the system continually and simultaneously evaluates several factors; pressure, the speed in which the pressure is rising, and motor specifications.
Benefit
- Dynamic, real-time calculations prevent the motor from ever reaching full stall conditions
- Stall reduction also reduces elastomer passing through expensive BHA components such an RSS tools that could also be damaged as a result of the motor stall
Unlike other industry offering, StallAssist technology is an active control system using surface data
Benefit
No downhole tools are required
StallAssist software detects and mitigates stalls during both rotating and sliding activity
Benefit
Confidence throughout the drilling process
Information Needed For Detection of a Mud Motor Stall
- The driller enters maximum operating and stall differential pressure from the motor manufacturer for rotary and slide drilling.
- The control system monitors the differential pressure based on the performance limits entered and the rate of exchange in differential pressure to determine when a stall has occurred.
Sequence Used For Reacting To & Mitigating A Stall
As pressure nears stall limits, H&P’s StallAssist technology continuously evaluates key factors such as drilling pressure and torque levels, rate of pressure increase, top drive RPM and torque to determine if there are indicators of a downhole motor stall. The system can be customized to match the downhole motor specifications and real-time dynamics for a given well section. Sub-second monitoring and system feedback prevent pressure from exceeding motor limitations that extend stator life. Once triggered, the control system automatically executes a precise response sequence—eliminating delays and reducing fatigue on the stator’s elastomer. This automation helps prevent premature BHA failures and lowers related replacement costs.
StallAssist® Technology Automated Response Process
- Rotation or oscillation is stopped
- Autodriller is switched off
- Pumps are stopped or reduced depending on configuration
- Surface torque is unwound
- Drillstring is picked up off bottom
- Flow is re-established
